Caring for your smile begins with you. You can preserve your teeth for a lifetime if you eat healthy, practice good oral hygiene and see your dentist regularly. If you neglect your dental health, you’re at risk for gum disease and other serious health issues.

Healthy Diet

Diet is just as important for your teeth as it is for the rest of your health. Be selective about the foods you eat. Be sure you eat a balanced diet and limit snacking. Every time you snack on sugary or starchy foods, acid attacks your teeth for 20 minutes or more. When you’re eating a full meal, you generate more saliva, which helps wash foods away from the mouth lessening the damaging effects of acid. To stay healthy, always choose nutritious foods from the five major food groups:

  1. Grain products including breads and cereals
  2. Fruits
  3. Vegetables
  4. Meat, poultry and fish
  5. Dairy products including milk cheese and yogurt

If you do snack, make healthy choices such as raw vegetables, fruit, plain yogurt and cheese. Here are some foods to avoid:

  • Sugary soft drinks and diet drinks
  • Sports drinks and excessive fruit drinks
  • Coffee and tea with sugar
  • Chocolate and candy — especially hard candy that takes a long time to dissolve
  • Large quantities of dried fruit — they’re loaded with sugar
  • Excessive citrus drinks — loaded with acid

Your teeth are vulnerable to decay when the food in your mouth makes contact with bacteria. Plaque, which is a sticky film of bacteria, can build up and break down the tooth’s protective enamel leading to decay. A cavity can start to form within 72 hours after ingesting sugary foods. The decay will eventually destroy the tooth and supporting bone if left untreated.

Daily Oral Care

Brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and floss daily to remove food particles between the teeth. Talk to Dr. Spinner about the most effective brushing technique for your oral health. The American Dental Association suggests using a soft-bristled toothbrush and replacing it every 3 to 4 months. Power toothbrushes are also a great choice.

Dentist Visits

And don’t forget to see Dr. Spinner at least once a year. Tartar can accumulate every 3 to 6 months on the tooth’s surface and a professional cleaning is the only way to get rid of it. Your dentist will also check your gums for early signs of periodontal disease. Gum diseases have few symptoms and can cause serious problems if not diagnosed and treated early.
