Crowns are the next step in treating a decayed tooth. If your tooth has a healthy root, but is too decayed or damaged to support a filling, a porcelain crown is a functional and aesthetically pleasing solution. Sometimes it is not the extent of the damage, but the type and placement that makes a crown a better option than a filling.

A dental crown is a sheath that covers your tooth. It becomes, for all intents and purposes, the surface of your tooth, relying on your healthy root for anchorage and support, but doing all the chewing and all the visual presentation.

The procedure for receiving porcelain crowns is similar to that used in making Porcelain Veneers and Fillings.

How the Crowning Process Works
Applying crowns usually takes about a month from start to finish and typically includes three appointments after the initial consultation with Dr. Spinner.

• During your initial consultation with Dr. Spinner, you and he can discuss your desired results and Dr. Spinner's opinion on the best solutions for correcting your tooth decay. If you decide together that porcelain crowns are the best option, you can then schedule the rest of your appointments.
• For your first appointment, your teeth will be shaped to remove all decay and damage and then a mold will be taken of your teeth. Dr. Spinner will send the impression to one of the best dental labs in the country, which will create your custom crowns. It takes about two weeks for the lab to make the crowns and send them back to Dr. Spinner.
• During your second appointment, the crowns will be inspected to insure a natural and attractive look. When both you and Dr. Spinner are happy with them, the custom crowns will be permanently sealed and bonded over your teeth.
• The last appointment will be a follow-up visit to make sure that your crowns are properly fitted and feel comfortable to you.
