What is TMJ?
The Temporo-Mandibular Joint (TMJ) or "jaw joint," is one of the most complicated joints in the body. Although we typically think of our jaw as simply moving up and down, a quick test shows that our jaws are capable of a striking range of movement: from side to side, forward and backward, even tilting. The TMJ is a very complicated joint, the combination of numerous muscles, bones, nerves, and connective tissues. In addition to the components of the TMJ, there is also the nearby aural nerves and the soft tissue of the throat, itself a masterwork of evolution allowing us to eat, drink, breathe, and speak. Needless to say, problems in this area can have far-reaching consequences.

What is TMD?
TMD is a disorder of the TMJ, when the joint is out of alignment. This is often caused by a condition known as malocclusion or "bad bite," and may lead to many symptoms including headaches; facial pain; jaw pain; grinding, sore, or chipped teeth, clicking or popping in the jaw; and limited jaw movement. In some cases, patients report tinnitus-ringing in the ears-and
strange tingling in the arms and hands. Sometimes, TMD is referred to as myofascial pain dysfunction
(MPD), and sometimes TMJ is used to refer to both the joint and the disorder.

How is TMD treated?
TMD is treated by specially-trained neuromuscular dentists. First, they measure the proper position of your jaw by determining the position in which your muscles are most relaxed. Then the dentist works to realign the jaw using a precise sequence of treatments discussed in detail on our TMJ/TMD Treatment Questions page.
