Long Island Cosmetic Dentist - Porcelain Crowns FAQ

What is a porcelain crown?
A porcelain crown is a sheath that encases a tooth too damaged to support fillings, but with a healthy root. Crowns completely cover the visible tooth, creating a brand new outer surface both for display and for chewing.

How long does it take to get crowns put on my teeth?
If there is not extensive damage to the teeth to be crowned, the procedure can be completed in a few visits over the course of about a month, allowing for the lab to custom-craft your crown from the mold made during your initial visit to Dr. Spinner.

How will the crowns feel?
After the initial procedure, crowns should feel pretty much like your normal teeth. They will chew the same, too.

Can crowns be put on teeth with damaged roots?
In some instances, yes. If the root is dead or dying, but the tooth is still firmly anchored in the gums, then a root canal may be performed to clean out the interior of the tooth, which is sealed with dental bonding resin, and then the tooth is capped with a crown, which now has a firm foundation.

When I think "porcelain," I think fragile. Does this mean my crowns will break?
Modern ceramics are very advanced materials, used on everything from golf clubs and hammers to the space shuttle. In fact, the Abrams tank uses ceramic armor and fires ceramic armor-piercing shells.

But one of the advantages of modern porcelain veneers, crowns, and fillings is that they are not harder than your normal teeth, making it less likely that they cause damage to adjacent teeth during jaw activity. Anything that will break a normal tooth will break a porcelain veneer, filling, or crown.
